Summer Watermelon Carving

It’s that time of year when the knives come out and the creative juices start flowing…If it’s July, it’s gotta be summer watermelon carving season!

Each year we try to come up with something new to enter into the National Watermelon Promotion Board’s watermelon carving contest. In past years, we’ve done everything from a Shrek watermelon to a Minecraft creeper. This year we decided to go happy, not scary, and we picked our good pal Olaf watermelon from the movie Frozen. We’re sending this one to the “funny” category although technically it could be considered in the “fruit basket” category as well.

Tips for making Olaf: We started with a round watermelon that seemed to stand up well on one end. Then we cut a little shallow sliver on the bottom to give it a flat base to sit on. Next we traced the shape of the Olaf head and cut around it. Then we carefully sliced off the green skin, and then dug a little deeper for the Olaf mouth. Meanwhile, we kept the kids busy by sending them to look in the yard for stick arms.

As I skimmed the title of the post I read “craving”, but I LOVE the carving!! My kids would love to do something like this. I can’t wait to show them!
